God of War Laufey is not expected to launch for a long time. Usually, when a game is announced at a showcase like this one was not too long ago, it’s still a ways away from being released. That’s true even when the game is the focal point of the entire showcase. It takes time to get games ready, and there are always scheduling issues (just ask every single game releasing this year that’s too afraid to challenge GTA VI in November).
So, the 2027 release window that God of War Laufey was given seemed to indicate that it was somewhere between 12 and 18 months away, which would still hit the 2027 window. But based on a bunch of factors, including some weird marketing timing from Sony, it looks like the game will be out a lot sooner than anyone expected.
God of War Laufey is Coming Out Very Soon

There are two different ways to announce a project, and God of War as a franchise recently employed them both. At the prior State of Play, they announced a remake of the original three games featuring Kratos, but they could really only show off the logo and say “coming soon” because it is still very early in development.
They didn’t have any material for a trailer of any kind. Then, at the most recent State of Play, Santa Monica Studio showed off 20 whopping minutes of gameplay and cutscenes from God of War Laufey. It was as if they had the entire first 20 minutes of the game ready to go, and games aren’t usually developed like that. It’s not as if they showed everything they’d done, and they just so happened to have completed 20 minutes of the game.
No, that indicates that the game is much, much further along in development. Combined with a few other factors we’ll see down below, it suggests that the game might actually be ready for launch right now. There is internet speculation that it could be shadow-dropped any day now.
That’s probably not true, but there are good reasons, including the showcase, to believe it’ll be sooner than expected. First, PS5 users are being sent emails about the game that say “coming soon.” Would they read that way if the game was actually coming in the back half of 2027?

Second, the official PlayStation X account is marketing it already. The banner on the profile is of Laufey, and it’s not even the next big game on the schedule for them. Wolverine is coming out in September, and that’s likely to be a huge game for them. Yet, they’ve chosen God of War Laufey to be the focal point.
Again, this doesn’t mean they’ll drop it in 2026. Otherwise, what was the point in labelling it as 2027? But there is a good chance it ends up being the first game dropped in 2027. All signs point to this thing coming out in less than a year, which is exciting news. Silly haters have their ridiculous takes, but real gamers are excited for this one to come out.
Conclusion
God of War Laufey is probably not coming out in the next few months, as 2026 is still likely to be dominated by Wolverine as far as PlayStation is concerned. But the next game in the hit action franchise is highly likely to come out in early 2027, much sooner than expected. The weird level of marketing, the promotion on the official X page, and the fact that so much was shown off indicate that we’re a lot closer to launch than initially expected.
