With the NBA season right around the corner, there is a new free agent searching for a new team. The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to a contract buyout with four-time NBA Champion Klay Thompson. After agreeing to a three-year, $50 million contract with the team back in 2024-2025, it hasn’t worked out in Dallas. Mavericks Buy Out Klay Thompson
With $17.4 million left on his contract, Dallas has decided to move on from one of the NBA’s best three-point shooters, leaving him a restricted free agent. Klay is coming off a career-low 11.7 PPG last season. However, it was the first time since being in the NBA that he was coming off the bench for the majority of the season, only starting in 8 of the 69 games he played.
The Mavericks are in a bit of a retooling era. With superstar Cooper Flagg on the rise, next season will be about seeing where they are roster-wise and, maybe in a few seasons, putting a team together to contend in a loaded Western Conference. Despite attempts to trade him, nothing ever developed from any teams that entertained the Mavericks’ offers.
What’s Next For Klay?
He has already agreed to join the Miami Heat after getting bought out and clearing the waiver wire. They have been linked together for the past month; it’s also a great fit. The Heat desperately need shooting and players who will space the floor; Klay Thompson is just what the team needs.
Final Thoughts
The expectations shouldn’t be high for the 36-year-old guard. I think he’ll have a good year and provide the spacing that the Heat need.
