Godzilla production and distribution TOHO have released the final trailer for the awaited sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. In the year 1949, the walking biohazard returns with a vengeance against Japan after its two-year defeat. With new information from the Sept. 8 preview, here’s what to know about the upcoming conclusion to the Minus duology.

Recapping Godzilla Minus One

Previously, in Godzilla Minus One, Japan had just exited World War II. The Zero Fighter, or Kamikaze pilot, Koichi Shikishima refused his order to die in the final battle. His cowardice soon led him to discover the island nation’s next threat, Godzilla.

Koichi is haunted by having dismissed his duties, but things would turn around for the better after meeting Noriko Oishi, who tended to an orphan baby named Akiko. He accepted a job as a minesweeper to defuse naval mines with other Japanese soldiers who served in the Second World War. He befriended former naval technician Kenji Noda, boat captain Seiji Akitsu, and the young crewmate Shiro Mizushima.

They witnessed the destruction of Godzilla while on the job, leaving remnants of battle cruisers across Japan’s coast. The King of Monsters’ mutation was accelerated thanks to the American nuclear testing in Bikini Atoll in 1946. Koichi and the defusal team faced the radioactive lizard’s hunt in search of fresh prey.

They all survived and were later recruited for Operation Wada Tsumi in 1947 in order to stop the amphibious menace. During preparations to fight Godzilla, Noriko was caught in its rampage at Ginza and is presumed dead. Koichi then relies on his neighbor Sumiko Ota to take care of Akiko.

After Kenji received news of Godzilla approaching Sagami Bay, he and Koichi prepared themselves to execute the mighty beast. With the modified fighter plane Shinden and the Japanese UN destroyers, they successfully defeated the kaiju, sinking him into the sea. Koichi soon reunites with Noriko after he received word from Ota that she survived the Ginza attack.

While Japan celebrates its victory, Godzilla is slowly regenerating its cells. The King of Monsters was hinted to return in a cliffhanger in Godzilla Minus One.

What’s Expected in Godzilla Minus Zero

Godzilla Minus Zero now has three trailers to share enough information about its premise. The following synopsis says:

“War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years passed since then, and the country faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes. crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”

The Apr. 19 trailer has established that the United States will be experiencing an attack from Godzilla, as it’s seen walking towards the Statue of Liberty. Viewers witnessed English speakers commenting about the latest operation, showing possible signs of failure.

Godzilla Minus Zero later revealed the name, Operation Narukami, on Sept. 8. The mission acts as a counterstrike against the King of the Monsters’ new form. The July 9 trailer also presented the growing consciousness of Godzilla becoming more of a national concern than a local problem.

The audience is introduced to a few new characters, with Ms. Aoyama being the only named person. There’s a new group of scientists that are involving themselves with Koichi and the members of the defense effort. Based on the previews, Godzilla has evovled where its more resistant to thermonuclear weapons.

The scientists suggested to the defense effort that they would need to fire everything they had to eliminate Godzilla. That includes dropping bombs that may sacrifice Japan’s good morality. Godzilla Minus Zero’s preview footage has hinted that the military can no longer stand aside while the rampaging kaiju terrorizes the nation and may pursuit to international threat.

Ms. Aoyama gives a brief mention of Plan B, which could be the alternative resolution: Operation Narukami were to ever fail. Godzilla Minus Zero also features the radioactive lizard gaining new abilities such as a possible anti-gravity field and a more powerful Atomic Breath.

For now, kaiju fans have to wait and see how Godzilla Minus Zero’s story will unfold this fall on Nov. 6.
