The Minnesota Vikings just announced that they have traded their 2024 first round draft choice J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants. The Giants made the move after their starting quarterback Jaxson Dart went down with a knee injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season. In return, New York will send an unconditional 2027 fifth-round pick to Minnesota.
McCarthy’s Saga
The story of McCarthy’s short NFL career has been well documented. The Vikings moved up in the 2024 NFL Draft to the pick Michigan alum 10th overall. Expected to sit his first season as an understudy to veteran Sam Darnold, the Vikings were excited about the young QB’s future. Slated to work with the “Quarterback Whisperer,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell on his development, JJ unfortunately suffered a knee injury early in the preseason forcing him out for the remainder of the season.
When 2025 rolled around, the Vikings declined to sign Darnold to a new contract leaving him to sign a sizable free agent deal with the Seattle Seahawks. They turned the reins of the offense over to McCarthy hoping that with targets like Justin, Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Aaron Jones that JJ would have a chance to ease into his starting role.
But disaster struck as McCarthy appeared flustered and confused from the start, failing to move the offense and never connecting with the superstar Jefferson in any meaningful way. In between, he missed seven games due to injuries and only slightly improved in the second half of the season when O’Connell simplified the playbook.
More Frustration in 2026
In the offseason, the Vikings signed veteran signal-caller Kyler Murray, to supposedly bring some experience to the team’s quarterback room and provide McCarthy with some competition at the position. But that pretense fell away quickly as Murray was announced as the Game 1 starter early in training camp. It continued to go downhill hill for JJ has inconsistent play and injuries allowed Carson Wentz to leapfrog him to become Murray’s backup.
O’Connell and the Vikings brass continued to claim that McCarthy had a bright future with the team, but trade rumors started immediately after the announcement. Those same rumors resurfaced in the past couple of weeks with the serious injuries suffered by other NFL quarterbacks like Dart, the Commanders Jayden Daniels and the Bears Caleb Williams.
What This Means
The Upside for McCarthy and the Giants, McCarthy gets the advantage of a fresh start and the chance to be tutored by head coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Mike Nagy. He won’t start right away but the pair get a chance to develop a talented, young (23) quarterback prospect.
The Vikings are now rid of a quarterback controversy and save $10 million to boot. How Kyler Murray finishes the season will determine how aggressively Minnesota pursues a QB in next spring’s NFL Draft or if they once again dive into the free agent waters to find an offensive leader.
