In a surprise move, the Minnesota Vikings traded defensive tackle Harrison Phillips to the New York Jets today. He was sent to the Jets for a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round selection. Along with Harrison, the Vikings sent a 2027 seventh-round pick to New York.

The trade of Phillips occurred less than a week before the NFL roster cutdown day. With the addition of veteran tackles Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, the plan was for the Vikings to have an experienced interior defensive line that would be effective against the run and the pass.

Phillips’ NFL Career

Phillips is a seven-year veteran of the NFL, having played his first four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, who drafted him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was a reserve in his rookie season with the Bills and missed most of his sophomore campaign after tearing an ACL in Week 3 of the 2019 season. However, he played solidly for Buffalo for the next two seasons before the Vikings signed him to a three-year, $19.5 million free agent contract in March of 2022.

Phillips anchored the Minnesota defensive line for the past three seasons principally as a run stopper. He finished his Vikings career with 207 tackles, six and a half sacks, and one forced fumble. He was named a team captain last year and was recognized as a locker room leader. Harrison has also been generous with his time and money throughout his career in supporting several charitable organizations. As part of the trade, the Vikings agreed to pay $3.7 million of Phillips’ $7.4 million salary for the 2025 season.

Rationale for the Trade

Salary considerations were one of the big motivating factors in the Vikings’ trading of Phillips. He signed a two-year contract extension last September that could have been worth up to $19 million. And with the acquisition of Allen and Hargrave, Minnesota had a lot of money tied up in its defensive front.

And with the emergence of young tackles like Jalen Redmond, Levi Drake Rodriguez, and rookie Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, the Vikings were confident they had enough depth for their rotation at the position. Phillips will join newly acquired former Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Jowon Briggs in solidifying the Jets’ interior defensive line. He will probably start opposite returning starter Quinnen Williams.
