Hollow Knight Silksong, Gaming, Team Cherry

For a long time, Hollow Knight: Silksong existed in that realm between announcement and development/release. It became a running gag in the gaming community that this game didn’t actually exist. Hollow Knight was a huge hit for indie games, becoming one of the most notable Metroidvanias out there. The sequel has been highly anticipated since its reveal in 2019. Now, almost six and a half years later, we know it’s coming, and we finally know exactly when.

Silksong Release Date Finally Confirmed

The developers and the larger gaming community swore up and down that Hollow Knight: Silksong was very much a real game, but the longer we went without a release date or actual trailer/gameplay reveal, it began to feel like it wasn’t going to ever come. Currently, Elder Scrolls VI and BioShock 4 exist in that same vacuum. The Hollow Knight sequel has finally graduated, though, and it’s off into real, playable game territory.

Nintendo got the ball rolling at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Showcase, giving a very brief glimpse and saying that it would come out in 2025. Nothing much happened again until Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, where Geoff Keighley simply said, “It exists.” Around the same time, Team Cherry promised a trailer in the coming days. Now, that trailer and the September 4 release date is finally here.

The sequel looks very much like a continuation of the original game, featuring the same graphics, same gameplay, and same general vibe. You can expect new levels and areas to explore, but it’s going to be a sequel, based on the trailer, that does not redefine the formula too much. Team Cherry also confirmed the release date that is surprisingly soon.

We knew it would drop, based on speculation, breadcrumbs left by those involved, and anticipation, that the game would be arriving before “Holiday 2025”, which is essentially November. Still, with this being the first trailer and the first major confirmation that the game really, actually, unequivocally exists and is coming out, that is awfully quick. It is better for fans who have waited painstakingly for something to not have to wait forever, though. It would be harsh to finally release the trailer and set the release date as far from now as possible.

Clearly, Team Cherry held off on any major marketing or announcements until the game was ready for release. This is a smart tactic for indie developers. They don’t have the resources to churn out games, so while Sony can announce a game years in advance and have media to go with it, indie devs don’t have the same luxury. So Team Cherry waited and waited, and anticipation grew nearly to a boiling point. Finally, we can all return to Hallownest.

It is expected to be widely available like the first game, which currently sits on Game Pass for those who subscribe and want to check it out before Silksong drops. The Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC will all get it, but it’s also going to last-gen consoles, too. Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 gamers can also play it.

Conclusion

There shouldn’t have ever been any real doubt that Silksong existed, but the last six years have made it seem impossible. Finally, our long national nightmare is over, and a game that was announced is coming out in the next couple of weeks. Now, we just need for others, like Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 to follow suit, but for now, the gaming world can celebrate this win and get to saving Hallownest on September 4.
