The Jacksonville Jaguars did what many in “Duuuval” county thought was possible. They knocked off the defending AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs 31-28. Last night’s game had everything you could imagine, from turnovers to swings of momentum to go-ahead game-winning drives by both teams. It was one of the best Monday Night Football games in recent memory. Let’s jump into last night’s game and reveal how the Jaguars upset the Chiefs!
Buildup to Jaguars vs Chiefs
This game was built up to be one of the best games of Week 5, and it did not disappoint. Entering last night, we had the 3-1 Jaguars, who were coming off a tight win on the road against the San Francisco 49ers, 26-21. This team has been one of the more impressive teams through the first month of the season, considering it’s the first year under the head coach, Liam Coen. If the Colts weren’t as great as they have been, the Jags would be the class of the AFC South.
As for the Kansas City Chiefs, they had finally exploded. Getting Xavier Worthy back in their dominant win over the Baltimore Ravens, 37-20, paid immediate dividends. With his explosiveness and ability to stretch the field, he was the missing piece for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs as they scored the most points they’ve scored since their 41-10 win over the Chicago Bears in 2023. With a record of 2-2, KC needed to continue its momentum.
“Monday Night Baby”
It looked early on that Mahomes and Kelce were going to run away with it, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead. Then it was as if the momentum shifted. It may have been DUUUVAL county or the “New” Jaguars, but they flipped the switch and turned it up. After Trevor Lawrence’s 10-yard rushing TD to even the game at 14-14, KC looked to retake the lead. Then THE play of the game happened.
Devin Lloyd would pick off Mahomes on the goal line and return it 99 yards for a pick six. From down 14 to being up seven, 21-14, the crowd exploded. Thank goodness the Jags don’t play in a dome because the roof may have been blown off. The Chiefs would go on to tie the game at 21 after a Trevor Lawrence interception. Here is where the craziness began.
Over the course of Mahomes’ career, if the game is close late, Kansas City has pulled out more wins than not. Whether it be a game-winning drive or their defense coming up with a big stop. Their defense would hold Jacksonville to a 52-yard field goal by Cam Little. Down 24-21, with eight minutes to go, this is a situation they have thrived in. KC would go on a seven-play touchdown drive that would take almost seven minutes of game clock.

Down 28-24, Lawrence and the Jags had a prime opportunity to show that this is the beginning of a new era. On 3rd & 7 with a minute to go, Lawrence hit Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard connection to extend the drive and execute an explosive play on one of the best defenses in the NFL. Those two are starting to regain the chemistry they found last season.
Five plays later, first and goal at the one-yard line, Lawrence would score one of the more miraculous rushing TDs of the season. When the ball was snapped, he would trip, fall, and stumble before scoring the game-winning touchdown and putting the Jags on top 31-28. The Chiefs would get the ball back, but with very little time. Not nearly enough for Mahomes’ Magic, as they would fall to 2-3 on the season.
Thoughts on Jaguars’ Primetime Win
Going into the game, they were number one in takeaways per game and had forced three or more turnovers in each of their first four games. My concern was how the Jags would look if they didn’t generate the extra possessions from the turnovers. It didn’t matter. They got their timely stops and had the biggest play of the game, the Lloyd pick-six.
The Chiefs got Chief’d. From a statistical standpoint, they won the game. They outgained the Jaguars 476 to 319 yards, won the turnover battle, and had more first downs. They led in time of possession, but this game came down to who had the ball last. I am impressed with the Jaguars, while the Chiefs have an internal issue that needs to be addressed, which will be discussed at a later date.
Final Thoughts
This was a step in the right direction for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the development of their young team. Not only was it a win over the Chiefs, but their coming back from a 14-point deficit has shown me that this is a different Jaguars team from years past. It would only take a few mishaps from the Colts for DUUUVAL to be right back in the hunt for an AFC South title.
