Sean Mannion, Philadelphia Eagles, NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles’ search for a new offensive coordinator has finally ended. They are hiring former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion to fill the position. It is an interesting hire given his inexperience calling plays, but the Eagles have done this before. Let’s dive into the hire!

The Eagles’ next offensive caller has entered the building. After firing Kevin Patullo, a change was needed. The franchise has brought in Sean Mannion in an attempt to revitalize the offense. The 33-year-old former NFL quarterback isn’t too far removed from his playing days. He was drafted in the 3rd round back in 2015 by the then-St. Louis Rams. His final season was in 2023 for the Minnesota Vikings/Seattle Seahawks.

As a career journeyman, he was under a plethora of great coaches. He played under Sean McVay, Klint Kubiak, Kevin Stefanski, and Kevin O’Connell. Those are some of the best offensive minds in the league today. These past two seasons, he was the quarterbacks coach in Green Bay under Matt LaFleur. When you are around that many offensive wizards, some dust has to rub off on you, potentially.

Is This a Good Hire?

This is a massive jump for someone who has never called plays before. To enter a city like Philadelphia for the first time on a potential hot seat is kind of shaky. On the bright side, it’s not like he’s walking into a situation with a lack of talent. With Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, AJ Brown, & DeVonta Smith, they are waiting to explode.

Final Thoughts

The last time this organization hired a former quarterback coach who hadn’t called plays was Andy Reid, and we all remember how that worked out. What do you make of the hire? Do you think that Mannion will get this offense back on track or will it prove to be too much for the first time play-caller?
