NFL, Cleveland Browns, Jim Schwartz

One of the NFL’s toughest defenses has lost its play-callers. The Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz, has resigned from the team. This is a surprise to few when it was reported that he was disgusted with the organization after he didn’t get the head coaching position. Let’s dive into the loss for the team!

After hiring Todd Monken as their new head coach, Cleveland was hopeful that Schwartz would remain the team’s DC in this new regime. That would turn out to be blind optimism. In some instances, when you have an established coordinator in the building, you need to hire from within. Not promoting Schwartz has proven costly. Now they must find a new DC who can maximize the talent on the defensive side of the ball alongside Myles Garrett.

Reaction

I understand his frustration. He has been with the team for three seasons and figured he would get the first bite as the team’s next HC. At age 60, Schwartz might not have many more opportunities to be a head coach. I am not surprised by his resignation. He wanted the job, and when he wasn’t hired, he split.

Final Thoughts

That said, Schwartz has been a good-to-great defensive coordinator for the past seven seasons. I can see him taking a year away from coaching and reentering the coaching cycle next year when there are more openings. It makes no sense to make a lateral move and be another DC, unless the perfect situation arises. What did you make of his resignation?
