Authorities have entered week 3 of the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, and over 400 investigators have been put on the search. They are running through thousands of tips and leads, but have yet to name a suspect or an assumed suspect.
With doubt running through Nancy Guthrie’s family and friends, and the neighboring communities, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos reassured the public that “As long as we have the ability to chase a lead, it’s not cold.”
New Details in The Case
The biggest break in the case thus far turned out to be a bust. Last week, FBI agents were seen scouring the Catalina Hills and came across a stray glove, two miles from Guthrie’s home, that differed from the ones that volunteers were wearing during the search. It seems to match well with the suspect’s that was seen on recovered Nest doorbell camera footage. Officials and advisors were confident at the time that it would lead to the whereabouts of Nancy Guthrie.
However, after undergoing DNA analysis and being sent through the FBI’s database, there as not match. There is a partial DNA sample taken from Guthrie’s home which is in the process of being analyzed, but is unlikely there will be a match from that either.
Images and video of the suspect were released early last week after the FBI recovered the footage from Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera. It provided a starting point to identifying the suspect, and since the initial release, more details have surfaced. Authorities say the man is 5’9″ to 5’10” tall with an average build, and was seen carrying an Ozark Trail backpack which is exclusively sold at Walmart. New details include the suspect had a unique gun holster on his person, and may have been wearing a ring.
Nanos said in an interview yesterday that the holster is a good clue as it has identifying features. “We know he had a gun. We know he had a holster that had some pretty unique characteristics,” Nanos said. “We can’t quite identify it yet, but that’s being worked on. So naturally, we go to our gun shops everywhere and say: ‘Have you seen this guy? Can you help us identify this weapon? Can you help us identify this holster?’”
They are also looking further into the ring, and analyzing him he was wearing one and where it may have come from. “I look at the same photo you look at, and I get, I see it,” Nanos said. “I’m going to give that to my team. They’ll look at that. They’ll analyze it, and we’ll see. Maybe, maybe it is.”
Nancy Guthrie’s Family Pleads
Nancy Guthrie’s family has been active on social media releasing multiple videos pleading to the suspect for their loved one’s safe return. Officials recently cleared all members of the family, including ‘Today’ show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has been leading the plea online for her mother.
Guthrie was last seen at her home in Tuscon, Arizona, on January 31, 2026, after being dropped off from a family event. She was reported missing the following day after failing to show up to her weekly Sunday church service. The search for her has been ongoing ever since, and as the days pass by, her family continues to worry and hope for her return.
Public Inserts Into The Investigation
Representative Adelita Grijalva of Arizona commented on the internet sleuths who are speculating the details of Guthrie’s disappearance. However, Guthrie’s family is the one who started the spectacle and brought the amount of public attention on themselves, leading to many false tips and false ransom notes.
Grijalva said she “wished we stopped having these people that have fallen in social media platforms acting as if they are investigators.“
“I do think that it is hurting the investigation,” she said. “We have people sort of throwing out descriptions that don’t resemble the description that’s been put out by the County Sheriff’s Department.”
“We really do wish that they would let law enforcement do their job, because ultimately we want to bring Nancy home, and the Guthrie family would like to be able to see their mom,” she added.
The public being involved in an ongoing investigation is a double-edged sword. On one end, you have an entire community of people supporting finding Nancy Guthrie and aiding investigators with useful tips or knowledge. On the other end, you have people lying and misleading the investigators for money or fun.
