The United States is sick of the Trump administration obscuring information on social media and dismissing selected news networks for their truthful reporting. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr faces another embarrassing spotlight after Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin made a public comment on a Sunday Fox News interview. His latest threat was saying that he wants the “fake news” journalists and reporters to have their broadcasting license revoked for any coverage on the Iran War.

Brendan Carr’s Blind Eye on Middle East Conflict

The FCC Chairman publicized his warning over on X (then Twitter) on Mar. 14. He warned the news outlets that are covering the ongoing events of the Iran War with the following message: “Broadcasters that are running hoxes and news distortion – also known as fake news – have a chance to now correct course before the license renewal come up. The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their license if they do not.”

By public interest, Carr really meant the US president, his allies, and the remaining MAGA supporters. Then, on Mar. 15, Johnson backtracked on his statement, saying it was unconstitutional to suppress the press.

“I’m in big support of the First Amendment,” the Republican lawmaker said to Fox News. “I do not like the heavy hand of government, no matter who’s wielding it. So no, I would rather the federal government stay out of the private sector as much as possible. [Their] role is to protect our freedom, protect our constitutional rights.”

Johnson received crucial support from members of the Democratic Party after the interview. One of Trump’s leading critics, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, informed the American public, “It’s illegal for the government to censor free speech, [and the media] just doesn’t like Trump’s Iran War. [Carr’s threat] is straight out of the authoritarian playbook.”

The FCC Chairman tried to shrug the situation off in his favor, but his words proved he has deaf ears. He responded on CBS News, “People have gotten used to the idea that, you know, licenses are sort of property right, and there’s nothing that you can do that can result in losing their license. I try to sort of help reorient people, no, that there is a public interest, and broadcast is different.”

Why is the FCC Attempting to Control the Media Pipeline?

When Trump appointed Carr for his second administration, he entrusted the job to an attorney with 20 years of experience and a clerkship with the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The fruits of his labor have taken the United States broadcasting system into the dark age of media, following the plans first stated in the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025.

He led the FCC to support the president’s executive order to stop government funding for DEI programs, which NPR and PBS relied on. Trump has accused these networks of operating under “extreme liberal bias.” Carr also negotiated with the conservative group, The Heritage Foundation, which is led by ally Mike Gonzales. They further pushed for defunding and removing both networks’ licenses if they continue to educate and report to a “woke” audience.

Simultaneously, the FCC went after comedians such as Late Night host Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel received a week-long suspension from ABC for his remarks on the late Charlie Kirk. Carr did not present convincing evidence that the Late-Night host was making light of Kirk’s death with his witty banter.

Late Show host Stephen Colbert, who’s been reporting on Trump’s misdeeds to the public since 2020, has received similar treatment from the FCC Chairman. Colbert told his network, CBS, that he wanted to interview Texas Democrat James Talerico. The entertainment network denied that they refused Colbert’s proposal.

This all goes back to the Paramount-Skydance merger, which included multiple executives who favored the president’s ideals. Carr saw it as an opportunity to control the “balance” of CBS News’ reports and 60 Minutes’ interviews. However, Colbert explained the Equal Time rule, which requires broadcasters and TV personalities to offer their time slots to all political parties. Even with the merger, a network must comply before it is assumed to have media bias.

All of these actions were taken against networks that Trump believed would only pave the way to incriminate him. And with Paramount outbidding Netflix on purchasing Warner Bros., Carr expects to continue suppressing freedom of the press.

Distorting the News Will Harm the FCC in 2026

In recent months, the Trump administration has driven the US government towards an economic recession and social decline. If Brendan Carr chooses to press on with punishing truthful broadcasters and journalists, the consequences are likely to come fast.

The Iran War, or Operation Epic Fury, received global attention because the president chose to engage in the first attack against the Middle Eastern nation without Congress’s approval. He and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth have abused the US Army and Navy overseas, resulting in the deaths and casualties of thousands of lives, in order for Trump and Hegseth to display their superpower.

And on the home turf of the United States, Trump is facing a nationwide backlash for trying to distract the public from his criminal mentions in the Epstein Files. That includes purposely distorting the media to prevent further criticisms of his ongoing second term.

As a result, world leaders refused to cooperate and distance themselves from his tyranny. Oil prices have jumped up to $100 per barrel, raising gas prices to between $4-$7 per gallon. And tens of thousands of employees lost their jobs as the government grew more self-centered.
