Sam Altman

For over 7 months, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has repeatedly faced tech and financial critics in his AI venture. Many have voiced concerns about the negative effects of data centers, interviewed him to clarify his business decisions, and noted his failures in partnering with other Big Tech titans.

And now, as the father of ChatGPT continues to keep his AI vision afloat, his San Francisco home has been attacked twice. He responded on his personal blog that he will continue pushing forward with his life’s work. The tech bro billionaire may need to reconsider, for it almost cost him his family.

Three Suspects Targeted Sam Altman’s Mansion

According to WFMD Free Talk, Sam Altman’s mansion was targeted twice during the past weekend. The first attack occurred on Apr. 10, when a 20-year-old man threw a Molotov cocktail at the house. San Francisco police identified the suspect as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, who threatened to burn OpenAI’s headquarters. He is under custody and charged with possession of incendiary devices, attempted arson, and attempted murder.

The mansion later experienced another attempted hit on Apr. 12. Two assailants were captured on the compound’s security cameras in their car. The reports stated that the footage confirmed the sound of a gunshot, and the car’s license plate was used to locate them. Authorities were led to a home belonging to 25-year-old Amanda Tom. She and her partner-in-crime, 23-year-old Muhammad Tarik Hussein, were apprehended on the premise, and officers seized their three firearms for evidence.

Altman Responds with a Rare Family Photo

Sam Altman responded to the Molotov incident on Apr. 10 and has been given a mixed reception based due to referencing AI multiple times. He mentions in his personal blog about AI anxiety. Altman said, “There was an incendiary article about me a few days ago. Someone said to me [on Apr. 9] they thought it was coming at a time of great anxiety about AI and that it made things more dangerous for me. I brushed it aside.”

He then exclaimed, “Now I am awake in the middle of the night and pissed, thinking that I have underestimated the power of words and narratives. This seems like a good time to address a few things.”

This is where the Sora creator gained the most disbelief, manipulating the incident as an opportunity to discuss his vision for OpenAI. “AI will be the most powerful for expanding human capability and potential that anyone has ever seen,” he said in the first part of his address letter.

The family photo, on the other hand, is real. The baby on the table is Altman’s son, and the man on the right is his husband, Oliver Mulherin. Their child was born through surrogacy and treated at a neonatal intensive care unit in February 2025.

“Normally, [Oliver and I] try to be pretty private,” Altman wrote in the blog. “But in this case, I am sharing a photo in hopes that it may dissuade the next person from trying to throw a Molotov at our house, no matter what they think of me.”

The OpenAI CEO’s message is supported by a 2024 Business Insider coverage of the Altman family. He and Mulherin expressed being happily married and planned to have children one day.

OpenAI’s Business Practices Could Play a Part

While the SFPD has not revealed the suspects’ motives, the AI Bubble and the ongoing lawsuits against OpenAI are enough to give spectators a clue. New Leaf News has previously reported on Sam Altman’s motivations for his artificial intelligence behemoth, such as improving ChatGPT’s capabilities by hyperscaling data centers across the US.

The following months indicate that the American engineer has had a troubled career, with the media tracking his business investments and a lack of profit. His failed collaborations with other Big Tech leaders, such as Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Oracle’s Larry Ellison, who dissociated with him after their partnerships. He also mentions his lawsuit against Elon Musk, who’s suing OpenAI for abandoning their nonprofit mission.

When Sam Altman agreed to a contract with the US Defense Department to replace Anthropic with OpenAI, the company lost a majority of its trust. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and her colleagues requested an investigation into the matter because of the Trump administration’s attempt to incorporate AI into military weapons.

Now, the newest investigation revolving around Altman’s business practices is the 2025 Florida State University shooting. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced he’s suing ChatGPT for generating the school shooting plan. “We’re demanding answers on OpenAI’s activities that have hurt kids, endangered Americans, and facilitated the recent FSU mass shooting,” he stated on X (then Twitter).

Altman May Need to Consider Retiring

The three suspects who attempted to murder Sam Altman are signs that his AI venture could lead to his end. As much as he wants to continue pursuing his company as a convenient and reliable source for LLM models, I don’t believe it’s wise, given his current situation.

The world has witnessed numerous occurrences surrounding OpenAI’s negative impact. The Memory Crisis is a prime example of his intentions, which influenced RAM and graphics card manufacturers to go anti-consumer. In the end, they experienced more losses than gains while damaging communities and the environment.

Altman is also risking not only his livelihood, but his family as well. The Apr. 10 and 12 attacks could spark a violent rebellion against him if he intends to keep OpenAI alive.
