Derrick Henry, Baltimore Ravens, NFL

The Baltimore Ravens are entering the second season of the Derrick (King Henry) Henry era. Last season was a successful regular season, but it fell short in the playoffs. Last season, Baltimore went 12-5 and finished in first place in the AFC North. With their win total predicted at 11.5, according to FanDuel, the Ravens should have one of the best records in the league next season. Let’s dive into their schedule and see if they can replicate their success!

Ravens’ First Month

  • Week 1: @ Buffalo Bills (SNF) 0-1
  • Week 2: vs Cleveland Browns 1-1
  • Week 3: vs Detroit Lions (MNF) 2-1
  • Week 4: @ Kansas City Chiefs 2-2

Baltimore starts their season the way their playoffs ended last season, on the road in a rematch against the Buffalo Bills. This is shaping up to be one of the best regular-season games of the year. On one side, you have the most recent MVP in Josh Allen against the two-time MVP Lamar Jackson (Action Jackson). When these two juggernauts go at it, these games are always close and come down to the wire. I have Allen and the Bills winning round two. Bills get the ball last and make one more play than Baltimore.

After a gut-wrenching Week One loss, the Ravens head home to take on one of their division rivals, the Cleveland Browns. This game will be as much of a mismatch as this season. Cleveland is still in their “rebuilding” phase of their franchise. I don’t see a Joe Flacco swan song in coming home to Baltimore as Jackson and (King Henry) pave the way to their first win of the season.

In Week 3, they host Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions. On paper, this should be a dogfight. The only problem for the Lions is that they are going against Lamar Jackson. Jackson has been dominant in his career against the NFC, with his 94.4 winning percentage being the best of any quarterback in interconference games since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. They soar to a comfortable win on Monday Night Football!

You want to talk about a big game feel. Whenever these next two teams tangle, there’s always fireworks. Baltimore is going on the road against the defending AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs. However, coming in on a “short week”, I believe the Chiefs defend homefield and pull out a win late. This will be Baltimore’s most challenging game up to this point in the season.

Ravens’ Fly High

  • Week 5: vs Houston Texans 3-2
  • Week 6: vs Los Angeles Rams 4-2
  • Week 7: BYE WEEK
  • Week 8: vs Chicago Bears 5-2
  • Week 9: @ Miami Dolphins (TNF) 6-2

After a difficult 2-2 start to the season, it’s time to turn the ship around. Taking on the Houston Texans isn’t what it seems on paper. The depleted offensive line and understaffed receiving core will be too much to overcome. Baltimore will handle business at home against a team they have had success against in the past. The game will be low scoring, but the Texans don’t have the horses to win the race, or the birds to fly like the Ravens, ha-ha.

The Rams game will be an interesting one. Two of the best-run organizations in the league squaring off against each other in primetime. As for the matchup, it’ll be difficult for the Ravens. LA has the weapons to spread Baltimore’s defense thin and play in space. Now with the addition of Jaire Alexander in the offseason, that will help. Henry will take this game over by himself. Baltimore keeps Stafford and the high-powered Rams’ offense on the sideline as they chew up the clock, leading to a nice win at home.

Hosting the Chicago Bears in Week 8 should also generate the same level of interest as the Rams game. Depending on how the first seven games of Ben Johnson’s tenure go, it’ll give us enough film to gauge how this will play out. This game is a classic back-and-forth affair in the 30 minutes. Then the Ravens flex their muscles and dominate the second half. We all know Jackson’s track record against NFC teams.

In their third Primetime game in the first nine weeks, Baltimore travels to Miami to take on the Dolphins. Without being too upfront, we all know how this game ends. The same way most Ravens/Dolphins games end—a complete dominant performance by Action Jackson and King Henry. Baltimore is one of the most physical teams in the league, while the Dolphins have been pushovers during the majority of the Mike McDaniel era.

B-More’s Third Act

  • Week 10: @ Minnesota Vikings 7-2
  • Week 11: @ Cleveland Browns 8-2
  • Week 12: vs New York Jets 9-2
  • Week 13: vs Cincinnati Bengals (Thanksgiving Night) 10-2

Sometimes you have to use the K.I.S.S. method when previewing these games: Keep It Simple, Stupid. With JJ McCarthy entering his first full year as a starter, this is a challenging task despite it being in Minnesota. The Vikings had one of the best defenses in the league last year and will need another defensive masterclass to pull off this upset. That will not be the case; Jackson and the Ravens will win this game by controlling the time and forcing McCarthy into rookie mistakes.

Much like their Week 2 matchup, this is a mismatch for the Browns. By this point in the season, it might be one of the two rookies starting under center for Cleveland. There won’t be a crazy Jameis Winston performance to upset the Ravens this season as they roll to their sixth straight win.

Hosting the New York Jets could bring issues for the Ravens. Facing a quarterback as talented as Justin Fields presents many problems. If Baltimore’s pass rush can’t get home, this will create opportunities for Fields to utilize his legs and threaten the Ravens’ defense. Despite all that, the ground game between Jackson and Henry will control this game. Don’t be surprised that special teams play a big part in the game.

Now this next game has NFL fans seething and foaming at the mouth. Both Bengals vs. Ravens games last season were among the best of the regular season. The most significant difference between last year and this year is that the Bengals’ offensive line and defense are arguably worse. Unless Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase go Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs, this is a bad matchup for Cincinnati.

The Ravens’ “Poetic” Stretch

  • Week 14: vs Pittsburgh Steelers 11-2
  • Week 15: @ Cincinnati Bengals 11-3
  • Week 16: vs New England Patriots 12-3
  • Week 17: @ Green Bay Packers 13-3
  • Week 18: @ Pittsburgh Steelers 13-4

Buckle up your chinstrap; it’s Steelers week. These games are physical, low-scoring, and a spectacle where, if you leave the game with your team intact, you “won the game.” I see round one ending with the home team, Baltimore, taking this game. This will be close; however, this game ends with Action Jackson getting the ball last and the Ravens running the clock out.

Rolling into Cincinnati on a nine-game winning streak, they get their divisional rematch against Burrow and the Bengals. This is where they split. Despite all their offensive line and defensive woes, this is a great spot to split with Baltimore. Despite being one of the best teams in the AFC, I do not believe that the Ravens are head and shoulders above this division. Cincy snaps their nine-game winning streak.

Week 16 is a great bounce-back spot for the Ravens. This New England Patriots team will be better with the addition of coach Mike Vrabel, but it won’t be enough. New England is still a few years away from challenging any top team in the NFL. Lamar will have one of his best performances of the year in this game, which will plant his flag firmly in the MVP race.

After getting their groove back against the Patriots, Baltimore travels West to Lambeau Field to take on the Packers. This would be an excellent match-up for Jordan Love and the Packers if all their weapons were healthy. However, they are not. I am banking on the Ravens’ elite offense to continue their reign of dominance in Lambeau and do a few Lambeau Leaps of their own.

As for the last week of the season, Baltimore is traveling to Pittsburgh to take on their hated rival, the Steelers. For the past few seasons, Pittsburgh has had an excellent track record against the Ravens, even if it has split the division games. They will split the home games again this season. The Ravens will win their home game, and the Steelers will win this one.

Final Thoughts

The Baltimore Ravens will continue to be one of the best teams in the NFL. I have them finishing the regular season with a record of 13-4. A record that might be good enough to land them the top seed in the AFC. With that being said, I am sure Ravens fans will rejoice in experiencing another dominant regular season.
